The Basic Natural Perfumery Course begins February 28, 2010

This course is entry-level, comprehensive, and is the foundation for advanced studies in perfumery.

Just added! A bonus module that will be launched when students complete either the Interactive or the Self-Paced coursework. This bonus module will give students a head start on the Intermediate Level of natural perfume study.

The course is taught by Anya McCoy, Perfumer for Anya's Garden and President of the Natural Perfumers Guild.

There are additional materials including bottles, lab glassware, tools, and other items that are needed for the course. A complete list is provided before you begin your studies. Estimated cost: $150.

A Certificate of Completion in Basic Natural Perfumery is issued upon submittal of the successful final essay and perfume. There is a $75 fee for the perfume review and certificate of completion.

The Aromatic Study Kit

The Anya's Garden Natural Perfumery Institute aromatics kit is available for $225, plus shipping. This is mandatory for the course due to the study criteria. There are twenty-four 4ml bottles of essential oils and absolutes in the kit, packed in a wooden box. Several of the more precious oils,, such as Rose de Mai, are diluted in order to maintain a reasonable cost.

The deposits and tuition are non-refundable.

Major Interactive Component:

The interactive one-hour online chats are conducted in a Yahoo! group, and consist of a real-time meeting where questions and answers can be addressed for the current module.

They will be held on the 14th day of March, April, May, June, July, and August of 2010. Please check that those dates do not interfere with your work, religion, or holiday schedule. Chats are held at 5 PM EST, United States. For example, if you are in the Western Pacific, Australia, Singapore, Japan and so on, you will need to get up in the early morning hours to participate. If you are in Europe, it will be late evening for you.

Many students have been able to make this schedule, but please confirm that you can commit to this schedule before you sign up for the Interactive Course option. If you miss the chat, you can ask the instructor questions in the Yahoo! group later that same week.

Former students loved the chats because they bonded with the instructor and the other students, and were able to assist each other with suppliers, observations, feedback, and more. This year we will try to schedule a Skype chat so that we can all talk to each other in real time. I love to work with students to help them progress with their dream of becoming a perfumer. The courses that I offer are for those who cannot travel to attend classes. There are many, many special and unique techniques that I teach as part of the Basic Perfumery Course, and I will share them with you.

No matter which study option you are enrolled in, each option provides a systematic, logical approach to the practice of perfume creation. This will give you full rein to follow your creative impulses. You will learn how to evaluate your own blends and the blends of others with lack of prejudice, which is the true goal of an artist. You will bloom as an artisan; one who creates with your hands, your nose, your scent memory, and your consciousness.

THREE OPTIONS FOR STUDY

1. INTERACTIVE COURSE

For the student who is certain that they can devote 10-12 hours per week to study and practical exercises. The instructor will interact with the students in a monthly online chat and the students will have a chat group that they can use anytime.

If the student falls behind in assignments, they can transfer to the self-paced course to complete their certification.

Students will have access to the online study materials and Yahoo group for one year following the end of the interactive course.

There are no prerequisites.

Enrollment is available only once each year, beginning in December for the course that begins in February.

2. SELF-PACED COURSE

For the student who has family or work constraints on their time and needs up to a year to complete the study for certification.

The self-paced student will have access to all of the same study materials and online resources as the interactive course student. Completion of assignments is voluntary, and the student will qualify for certification upon fulfillment of a successful final essay and perfume submittal.

Students will have access to the online study materials and Yahoo group for one year.

There are no prerequisites.

Enrollment is available beginning December 2009, and thereafter any time after February 2010. The first course will begin February 28, 2010.

3. SELF-STUDY - NON-WEB-BASED

For those who wish to study on their own and who have no access to the Internet, the more affordable Self-Study Option (SSO)is available.

The SSO students will use this book to study independently of the instructor, working on the exercises at their own pace. There is no lack of information for the SSO student that would preclude them from becoming a perfumer, but rather, the SSO is offered for students who are on a limited budget, or who feel more comfortable working on their own.

The Anya's Garden Natural Perfumery Institute Basic Level Textbook and Aromatics Kit are available for $775. Students will study at their own pace, and will submit an essay and perfume in order to apply for the certificate of completion in the course when they are finished. There is a $75 charge for the perfume review and the certificate.

There are no prerequisites.

The textbook and kit will be available February 28, 2010.

How Do You Choose a Perfumery Instructor?

Before choosing a perfumery instructor, a person who is interested in studying perfumery should first research prospective instructors and their accomplishments. The investment of time and money in pursuing a dream career requires some insight into the instructor and what they offer in the course.

The first to ask in choosing an instructor should be: Is the instructor an accomplished perfumer?

This is very important - after all, if they don't make acclaimed perfumes, why are they teaching perfumery? A perfumery course is not just nuts and bolts; it's also the theory and practice that must be put into action. The second question: Does the instructor have teaching experience?

Anya McCoy is a former adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University, having taught Masters level courses in Urban Design and Development. Additionally, she has taught many herbal and aromatherapy classes at various learning centers, in a casual and fun environment. Public speaking and addressing the many questions from the attendees rounded out her experience.

On the very active international Natural Perfumery Group on Yahoo!, Anya is recognized as a generous and helpful teacher and guide. Over the years she has mentored many aspiring artisan perfumers and watched their businesses blossom.
