Natural Perfumery Institute Faculty

I am fortunate that my longtime association with talented natural perfumery and associated arts people on the Internet goes back 12 years or more. By inviting them to teach special seminars that complement the natural perfumery course I am showing you, the student, that I trust their reputation as outstanding experts in their field and that they are qualified to be on the AGNPI faculty.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden's Fragrant Plants

Anya loves the fragrant plants at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in South Miami.

It's one of only two tropical botanic gardens in the USA, the other being in Hawaii. The staff at Fairchild were kind enough to share their Excel.xls database of Fragrant Plants with Anya, and she provides it here for you.

It lists the scientific and common names of the plants, the season of fragrance, the time of day the scent is wafting in the air, whether the scent is good or bad, the type of plant form, and a numerical key to the location in the garden.

The key map is available when you visit Fairchild, and you can print this out as a guide for your scented journey. Click here to download the Excel.xls document.

Founder and Head Instructor Anya McCoy launched the first natural perfume line in the United States in 1991. In 2013 she became the first artisan perfumer invited to join the Amerian Society of Perfumers, a great honor.

She authored the first college-level textbook in natural perfumery, sharing decades of research, experimentation, observations and professional expertise.

Anya launched the first online natural perfumery course in 2007.

Anya founded the international Natural Pefumery group on Yahoo in 2002 that now has over 2500 members. She has nurtured thousands of members of that group in the pursuit of natural perfume knowledge and community.

At the urging of members of the Yahoo group, she founded the Natural Perfumery Institute in 2007, which is the first online course in natural perfumery.

A passionate lover of natural aromatics, Anya started her studies in the mid 1970's, using hard-to-find perfumery books as her guide. She earned a B.A. in Economic Botany from the University of California, Riverside, and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from S.U.N.Y. Syracuse and Syracuse University. During her studies, she focused on fragrant plants. In 1990, she was elected District Supervisor of the Soil and Water Conservation Board in Collier County, Florida - chances are she's the only perfumer worldwide elected to a public office! In 1991, she started a niche natural perfumery line, Anya's Tropical Essences.

She has hosted a lively 2200-member-strong online international natural perfumery group since 2002. In 2007, members convinced her to begin teaching, because there was a need for offline self-study and also online learning options for the serious perfumery student.

In addition to creating successful perfumes for her line Anya's Garden Perfumes, Anya is also the President of the Natural Perfumers Guild, an international association of over 150 natural perfumers, suppliers, associates and friends. Anya is a much-beloved mentor and counselor to many in the natural perfumery field, and has made herself available for questions and has contributed commentary and articles in numerous online forums, including the Yahoo group, Basenotes, Perfume of Life, and her blog, where she holds an "open session" for questions every Sunday.

Anya has blogged over 400 times on the subject of natural perfumery and has authored or co-authored numerous articles on the art:
