    Dear Anya
I live on the Oregon Coast. I find many interesting things while walking the beach, especially this time of year, when the storms are high. (Lots of Japanese tsunami debris this year; lots of foam insulation chunks and bamboo , etc.) We also have many whales that migrate up and down, just offshore. Having an interest in natural perfumery, I have wondered for many years about finding ambergris. But I have not been able to find any definitive information as to how to do this. I’ve told myself chances too rare to worry about.

But then I saw your photos of what it looked like, and that it wasn’t always huge chunks, and looked like things I see. And again I am wondering. So often I have seen similar things on the beach! And I figured it was fishing boat garbage or rotting fish parts. I am not a member of your guild, as I do not create natural perfumes, but I was hoping you may be able to direct me to some information or person who could help me know about identifying and “harvesting” ambergris? How do I sort it out from the rotting garbage? If I could find some, where and what is the market?
    Sincerely
    Carol Lucas, Herb Specialist

      Hi Carol:

Thanks for stopping by. I’d be happy to help you ID any potential ambergris chunks you find. Just email with with photos, a description, and I’ll ask you to send me a small sample of the chunk. Easy peasy!

      hth,
      Anya
